Mahidol University

Mahidol University, one of Thailand's leading academic institutions, sought to reduce its carbon footprint and electricity costs at the Faculty of Engineering campus in Salaya. The solution was a 252 kW on-grid solar PV system installed across multiple faculty rooftops.

Project scope

The installation spanned three buildings with a combined rooftop area of approximately 2,200 square metres. We deployed high-efficiency monocrystalline panels paired with string inverters for optimal performance under partial shading conditions — a key consideration given the surrounding tree canopy.

Technical highlights

The system connects directly to the university's low-voltage distribution board through a dedicated AC combiner panel. Real-time monitoring via the EMS platform allows facility managers to track generation, self-consumption and grid export from a single dashboard. During weekends and semester breaks, excess energy feeds back to the Provincial Electricity Authority grid under the net metering scheme.

Results

Annual generation averages 340,000 kWh, covering approximately 28% of the faculty's electricity demand. The university projects a payback period of 5.2 years with an estimated 1.4 million THB in annual savings. The installation also serves as a living laboratory for engineering students studying renewable energy systems.
